Pengelly), Stirling street, Wallaroo, George, dearly beloved husband of the late Annie CHATFIELD, aged 87 years. Butcher, Grazier. Became Mayor of Wallaroo, SA. for two years. 1 Dec 1917 lost seat on council by 5 votes after serving continuously for 42 years. Australian Biographical Index lists George as businessman, burgess, F.52, 310-312. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~deadsearch/wallaroo_a_f.htm CHATFIELD, ANNIE 1922 AGE 72, GEORGE 1932 AGE 87 Photo No. 9077 File No. 2 Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : Friday 24 December 1909) At the election for councillors for Wallaroo, Mr. George Chatfield (according to the "Southern Cross") gained the unique distinction of being returned as councillor for North Ward for the 30th time in succession. He twice filled the office of Mayor. This speaks well for one of tho very oldest tradesmen in the port. Mr. Chatfield was one of the first stewards of the Jockey Club, a position he still retains, and where, as everywhere, his integrity has rendered him very popular. The Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : Friday 23 September 1910) H.M.S. Prometheus, with Admiral Sir Reginald Henderson, arrived at Wallaroo from Port Lincoln at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. The admiral on landing was met on the jetty by Captain Clare. Councillor Chatfield (acting mayor) welcomed the admiral to Wallaroo. An inspection of the smelting works and acid works followed. Last night the admiral was entertained at dinner by the municipal council, and ex-mayors and other leading townsmen were present. Sir Reginald Henderson will leave Wallaroo for Adelaide this morning. The Register (Adelaide, SA : Wednesday 14 July 1920) Mr. George Chatfield (Mayor of Wallaroo) is an inmate of the Wallaroo Hospital as the result of injuries sustained in. a recent motor accident. He is progressing favourably. The Register (Adelaide, SA : Wednesday 7 December 1927) Mr. George CHATFIELD, of Wallaroo, who celebrated his eighty-third birthday on Wednesday, is the fourth son of the late Mr. Levi CHATFIELD, of Thebarton. In the early days Mr. CHATFIELD, sen., was employed by the late Mr. Gabriel Bennett, and brought many fat cattle to the Adelaide market from as far north as the River Darling. Young Chatfield became associated with stock from his boyhood days and has been so ever since. His services as a veterinary surgeon are often called into requisition, and in this connection alone he has rendered valued service to his native State. In 1868 he went to Wallaroo, and after serving as a butcher for some years opened business on his own account. The family shop in Owen terrace was among the best-known and well-conducted in town. Shipping interests were especially catered for, and through the kindliness of Mrs. Chatfield (who was a daughter of a pioneer architect and builder, Mr. W. Lewis) many a young sailor found a home from home. The family of two sons and five daughters, was prominently associated with the public, social, and sporting life of the town. In municipal life Mr. Chatfield holds a unique record. For more than 45 years he served his town, several years as Mayor. In 1917 when the corporation became involved in financial difficulties, owing to the destruction of the town hall by fire, Mr. CHATFIELD, although not then in the council, was the only man prepared to shoulder the responsibility, and he was elected Mayor. Several Councillors had previously resigned, as they did not desire to face the liabilities. With characteristic courage Mr. Chatfield had the satisfaction of seeing the liabilities all met and the finances of the town put on a sound footing. As a reward for this service he was nominated for a further term. A triangular contest, combined with party feeling, resulted in his non-success at the polls. He has since retired from public life and spends his spare time at home in his cottage garden. Mrs. Chatfield died about 10 years ago. The Yorke's Peninsula Agricultural Society owes much to Mr. CHATFIELD, who is the only original trustee living. He has maintained his position with the Kadina and Wallaroo Jockey Club, and is still one of the most active members of that body. At one time he raced horses, and was a successful owner and breeder. He also combined with his butchering business the grazing and rearing of stock. In the local military forces he held a commission, and was senior lieu- tenant under Capt. J. A. Watt in the Mounted Rifle Company. Mr. Chatfield regularly attends at his daily duties at the Wallaroo Mount Lyell Fertilizers Company, where he holds a position of fore-man. The Mail (Adelaide, SA : Saturday 30 November 1929) Pioneer's Birthday. Yesterday Mr. George CHATFIELD, of Wallaroo, celebrated the eighty-fifth anniversary of his birth. He is the eon of a well-known Thebarton family, and was born at George street. For years he has been a prominent figure on the racecourse. Mr. CHATFIELD, before going to Wallaroo, was for some time cattle boy to Mr. Gabriel Bennett, when, he says, cattle sales were conducted near where Henley Beach road overway now stands. About 68 years ago he went to Wallaroo, where he was in business as a butcher for 40 years. He is an honorary member of Kadina and Wallaroo Racing Club. Mr. Chatfield declares that the Adelaide Cup emanated from his success on the old Thebarton Race course, when he won the Butchers' Handicap. He has served two terms as Mayor of Wallaroo. Surviving children are: Mrs. J. Maddern (Torrensville) Mrs. F J. Penglley (Wallaroo). Mrs. A. Patterson (Wallaroo), Mrs. J. D. Lawson (Malvern), Mrs. E Harrington (Adelaide), Mrs. C. O'Connor (Pinnaroo) Mr. George Chatfield (Murray Bridge), Mr. A. C. Chatfield (Keswick). There are also grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Claim in Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : Wednesday 4 December 1918) newspaper article that he had only one son, Trooper F. CHATFIELD, serving with the Light Horse in Palestine. Corporation of Wallaroo (150) George CHATFIELD, JP Son of the late Mr L. CHATFIELD, who came to Adelaide, South Australia from Sussex, England in the early pioneering days (1839). Mr George Chatfield has, for many years, held responsible positions in various public organisations in connection with the public life of the town and district of Wallaroo. He held office for 45 years in the Corporation, representing North and East Wards as Councillor, and for a further term of five years acted as Mayor. He is ex-Chairman of the Public Works Committee; member of the Kadina Agricultural Society Committee; Foresters' Lodge, Court Wallaroo; ex-member of the Wallaroo Institute Committee and Literary Society, and for over 30 years has been associated with the Yorke Peninsula Regatta, of which he was also President for five years. |
