The deceased was a prominent Mason, and was connected with a number of other institutions. In leaving London in 1857 he secured a passage by the ill fated Dunbar, but missed the vessel by a few minutes, and came on by the following ship, to learn that, with the exception of one man, the whole of the passengers of the Dunbar had perished. The brother of the deceased, Captain Henry CHATFIELD, was drowned in the memorable wreck of the Cawarra ín Newcastle Harbour. ----- Barrier Miner (Broken Hill, NSW : Thursday 28 October 1897) Charles CHATFIELD, an elderly man, well known at Stockton, was this morning found dead in his bed. ===== Charles Chatfield was born in Deptford, Kent in the year 1826, his father being in Government service and employ of Messrs Green and Wigram of Blackwall, the eminent ship owners and builders. At the age of 12 his parents died and under the guardianship of his uncle Mr. Chatfield was placed with Messrs Bowman and Droumond, ship builders and dry dock owners in Blyth in the north of England to learn the trade of shipwrighting. After three years and before his apprenticeship was finished, he was entrusted with the construction of vessels at the establishment. During the next 9 years he designed some of the fastest sailers in the transport service in the time of the Russian War of 1856. He decided to come to Australia in 1857 and applied for passage on the ill fated vessel Dunbar. which was wrecked at Sydney Heads. Through a misunderstanding, he missed his passage, arrived in September in a later vessel, The Dragoon with his wife, Ann Isabella and son Ambrose. He worked in Sydney, Tweed River, Grafton etc before coming to Newcastle to superintend the erection of the Government coal staith after previous contractors had failed in the work where he was employed for 2 years. In 1869 he superintended the upgrade of the Stockton patent slip. He was connected with the hospital, school of arts and church committees ----- Possibly married Mary Jane Gibson and died 28 Oct 1897 and had son Cecil Ernest born 1877/8 who died 21 Aug 1883.
