Philander, our subject, came to this county in 1850, and resided at first in Ganeer Township, but has since moved to Momence Township, where he has a splendid farm and home. He has lived here about seventeen years, and during the past twelve years has been engaged in the stock business as raiser, feeder and shipper, with varying success. His father, Thurston Hoag, was born in Canada, November 17, 1799, came to New York, then to Michigan, and finally to Illinois, at an early day, and settled in Ganeer Township, where he lived until his death, which occurred November 7, 1855.
