SEYMOUR COAL & GRAIN CO. The history of this successful organization is in the main the story of the business career of its president and founder, Henry Oliver CHATFIELD, who was born in Bethany, April 28, 1876, son of Henry W. and Addie Blackman Chatfield. He lives at 47 Washington avenue. First, he conducted a general store in Woodbridge for one year, after which he carried on a grocery business in the Buckingham building, Bank street, from August 1, 1901, under his own name, until 1919, when the Seymour Grain & Coal company was organized, and the business was moved to its present location, 88-102 Main street opposite the post office. Officers of this concern are the same today as when instituted under the new designation on Feb. 25, 1919, to wit: H.O. CHATFIELD, president; F.F. Herlihy, treasurer, and Miss Katherine O'Brien, secretary. H.O. Chatfield married Mary H. Treat, of Oxford, Nov. 19, 1906, and now has five children: Olive R. (Mrs. Mac Bissell), born Feb. 9, 1908; Henrietta Maye (Mrs. Christian Drummer), born Sept. 1, 1911; Henry T., born Sept. 1, 1912; Horace Minotte, born May 4, 1917; and Harriet Emily, born Jan. 17, 1922. All but Harriet, still too young, have been graduated from the Seymour high school, and Henrietta got her diploma from the New Haven state normal school and taught in the public schools of Seymour until June, 1935, when she retired because of her marriage. Horace entered Wesleyan University as a freshman in September, 1935. H.O. Chatfield has belonged to Mechanics Lodge, No. 73, I.O.O.F., for 38 years, and to the Woodbridge Grange for 40 years. During his 35 years' residence here he has been progressive and civic minded, always keeping abreast of the times. ===== United States Census, 1910 Name Henry O Chatfield Event Place Woodbridge, New Haven, Connecticut Gender Male Age 33 Marital Status Married Race White Relationship to Head of Household Son Birth Year (Estimated) 1877 Birthplace Connecticut Father's Birthplace Connecticut Mother's Birthplace Connecticut Sheet Letter A Sheet Number 3 Henry W Chatfield Head M 74 Connecticut Addie M B Chatfield Wife F 66 Connecticut Henry O Chatfield Son M 33 Connecticut Mary H Chatfield Dau-in-law F 28 Connecticut Oliva R Chatfield Granddau F 3 Connecticut Carolina Sayadak Servant F 18 Russia ----- USA Census, 1920 Name: Oliver H Chatfield Event Place: Woodbridge, New Haven, Connecticut Gender: Male Age: 43 Marital Status: Married Race: White Can Read: Yes Can Write: Yes Relationship to Head of Household: Head Own or Rent: Own Birth Year (Estimated): 1877 Birthplace: Connecticut Father's Birthplace: Connecticut Mother's Birthplace: Connecticut Household Role Gender Age Birthplace Oliver H Chatfield Head M 43 Connecticut Mary H Chatfield Wife F 38 Connecticut Olive R Chatfield Dau F 11 Connecticut Henrietta M Chatfield Dau F 8 Connecticut Henry T Chatfield Son M 7 Connecticut Horace M Chatfield Son M 2 Connecticut District: 479 , Sheet Number and Letter: 6B , Household ID: 115 , Line Number: 70 , GS Film number: 1820188 , Digital Folder Number: 004294458 , Image Number: 00553 ----- USA Census, 1930 [Family split over two pages as youngest three children on separate record headed by Henry T Chatfield] Name: H Oliver Chatfield Event Place: Seymour, New Haven, Connecticut Gender: Male Age: 53 Marital Status: Married Race: White Relationship to Head of Household: Head Birth Year (Estimated): 1877 Birthplace: Connecticut Father's Birthplace: Connecticut Mother's Birthplace: Connecticut Household Role Gender Age Birthplace H Oliver Chatfield Head M 53 Connecticut Mary H Chatfield Wife F 48 Connecticut Olive R Chatfield Dau F 22 Connecticut Henrietta M Chatfield Dau F 18 Connecticut Henry T Chatfield Son M 17 Connecticut Horace M Chatfield Son M 12 Connecticut Harriet Chatfield Dau F 8 Connecticut District: 0195 , Sheet Number and Letter: 11A , Household ID: 254 , Line Number: 47 , Affiliate Film Number: 279 , GS Film number: 2340014 , Digital Folder Number: 004531883 , Image Number: 00088 ----- USA Census, 1940 Name: H O Chatfield Event Place: Seymour Town, New Haven, Connecticut Gender: Male Age: 63 Marital Status: Married Race: White Relationship to Head of Household: Head Birthplace: Connecticut Birth Year (Estimated): 1877 Last Place of Residence: Same House Household Role Gender Age Birthplace H O Chatfield Head M 63 Connecticut Mary Chatfield Wife F 58 Connecticut Harriet Chatfield Dau F 18 Connecticut District: 5-152 , Family Number: 121 , Sheet Number and Letter: 6A , Line Number: 30 , Digital Folder Number: 005461407 , Image Number: 00959 |

Following the death of their son, Lt. Chatfield's parents brought his body back home to Bridgeport, CT for burial. The grave is located in Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, his monument carved with a cape, kepi, sword and sash. 'Chancellorsville' and 'Gettysburg' are inscribed at the base. The monument is one of the more poignant in the cemetery. Dale E. Call ----- Adjutant Henry Whitney Chatfield of Bridgeport, went out as a private in the Seventeenth at the age of eighteen. Being a young man of education, he was detached for service under Adjutant Wilcoxson, and afterwards at the headquarters of Adjutant-Gen. Meisenburg, At Gettysburg, Lieut-Col. Fowler was shot dead by his side: Chatfield's horse was killed, his haversack torn in pieces, and a Revolutionary sword at his side broken into fragments; yet he was unharmed. While on Morris Island, he volunteered with the other officers of the brigade to storm Fort Sumter, when its defenders were bewildered under the first crash of Gilmore's batteries. In Florida, he was adjutant of the brigade. Gen. Noble writes of him, "The loss of young Chatfield was sadly felt by a large circle of friends in and out of the army. He was a true man and a brave soldier, who served from convictions of duty and patriotic devotion. With a heart true as steel, and brave as the bravest, there was a charm of genial gentleness which attracted all, and made him friends wherever he went." --- Source: The Military and Civil History of Connecticut During the War of 1861-65, by William Augustus Croffut, John Moses Morris, published by Ledyard Bill, 1869 ----- Tomb Inscription: (FRONT) Lieut.
