She loved family, friends, church, dining, crafts, and gardening. She had been a member of the Vintage Voices of Elderly United, officer of her church, and an eighteen year cancer survivor. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Harold (Pete) Wallace, parents Inez and Henry Howson, sister Ethel May Howson, brothers Earl, Ernest, and Norman Howson, and grandson Jerry Roberts. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Donna and Jack Roberts of Denver, CO; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Kathy Wallace of Lewisburg, OH; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; sister Glenna Engle; sister-in-law Jennie Wallace; numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many close friends. Services on October 7th at 2967 Columbus Avenue United Methodist Church, Springfield OH, where she was a long-time member. |

She was very active in Town & Country School for the handicapped, sang in Vintage Voices, and enjoyed painting, crocheting and sewing. Children were the joy of her life. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her children Mary (Hitt), Ethel (Bob) Brodbeck, Jim (Pat) Davis, Cindi (Jim) Hearne, Keith (Shari) Davis; her grandchildren Dave (Grace), Dale (Camilla), Terry, Rebekah (Patrick), Robin (Craig), Lori (Mike), Bartley, Bradley, Mandi (Joe), Joshua (Hannah), Matthew (Elisa) and Jason (Lindsey); 13 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. A gathering of family and friends will be held at CONROY FUNERAL HOME on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until her funeral service at 1:00 p.m. with Mr. Russ Dickerson officiating. | Emily’s parents died when she was a young girl and she was left in the care of her mother’s cousin. On Jan 1, 1864, (this was during the Civil War), 13 year-old Emily was enrolled in the Wheeling Female Academy, a Catholic boarding school in Wheeling, West Virginia. Devoting herself to God, she became the first Catholic in the family. In her senior year, she asked her older brothers’ permission to become a nun; they immediately unenrolled her. Removing to Kansas she was soon married to a philanderer and not long after, (shortly after leaving him), had her first child. She then married Finley Chamberlin, a train conductor and recent Civil War veteran, and six more children followed, my grandmother Nellie being the eldest of that brood. Emily passed her strong Catholic beliefs to Nellie; she also passed on her insistence of strict obedience, family duty, moral rectitude, and the ability to make it on her own. |
