STEVENS "Gus \ Gussie" Augustin WashburnSpouse of Caroline ULMER 1866-1912 |
Find A Grave Memorial# 90144477 ----- September 1902 Obituary from the Magnolia [Mississippi] Gazette: Gus or "Gussie", as he was called by his mother and sisters, was a remarkably sweet tempered person. From the small water mill, which he helped his father to build on the Tangipahoa near Magnolia, MS, Gus built a lumber business which included 3 saw mills. "It is not enough to say that the community in which he lived has suffered a loss. It owed its existence to him, and in him centered the lives of hundreds of people who earned their daily bread in his employ. Theirs is a loss irreparable. But the world is poorer for the loss of such a man. Fair and open in all his dealings with mankind, pure in the purpose of heart, upright and noble in his walk and conversation, his character shines in the memory of those who knew him." Find a Grave Memorial ID 174349631. ----- According to his World War I draft registration, Clifton was of medium height and had brown hair and brown eyes. A boyhood accident crippled his left leg, for which he wore a leg brace. The book, Stevens-Washburn with Related Lines, by Annie Stevens Jones (1945), with a later supplement (1973) by Frances U. Bittman, lists Clifton's middle name variously as "Lanier" and "LeViers". Clifton himself gave his middle name as "Lee". That is what shows on his WWI draft registration, which he signed as Clifton Lee Stevens, and on the birth certificate of my father Richard Milton Stevens, Clifton's second of three sons. The middle name LeViers appears on Clifton's tombstone. ===== United States Census, 1930 Name: Clifton Stevens Event Place: New Orleans (Districts 1-250), Orleans, Louisiana Gender: Male Age: 31 Marital Status: Married Race: White Birth Year (Estimated): 1899 Birthplace: Mississippi Father's Birthplace: Mississippi Mother's Birthplace: Mississippi Relationship to Head of Household: Head Sheet Letter: A Sheet Number: 25 Record Number: 23736 Household Role Sex Age Birthplace Clifton Stevens Head M 31 Mississippi Bama Stevens Wife F 24 Alabama Olive Stevens Daughter F 5 Louisiana Fay Stevens Daughter F 4 Louisiana Clifton Stevens Son M 0 Louisiana |
