Biography: Ken was the only son of George Fenton Chatfield and May Chatfield (nee Foote). He was born in Melbourne and early in life became a keen cricketer, practising with his sister Audrey on the family cricket pitch. 'Chattie' was an excellent all rounder, good scholar, first-class sport, excelling at cricket and football. At Wesley College, where he was educated and matriculated, he was a prefect and was in the first cricket and football teams. At Melbourne University he was awarded blues in cricket and football. In his second year at Melbourne University he developed pulmonary tuberculosis and was unable to resume his studies for a year. Ken's good humour saw him through this difficult time, and he graduated in 1947.

He was a resident at the Alfred Hospital in 1948 and a registrar the following year when he married June Roberts, a physiotherapist on the staff at the Alfred. After finishing at the Alfred Ken and June did locums around Melbourne, as he believed this was necessary to extend his medical knowledge and skills. In 1951 he joined the practice of Andrew Taylor and Charles Hopkins in Mornington, Victoria, and was joined two years later by Bill Sewell. Ken studied for the MRACP while working extremely hard in a very busy general practice and qualified without taking any time off - no mean achievement.

Ken and June had three children, Elizabeth, Robert and Jo, who was two and a half years of age when her father was killed in a car accident in Mornington. He played football for Mornington while tennis, swimming and family activities were his main sources of recreation. He had a large circle of friends and a large number of devoted patients. He will always be remembered for his good humour, his happy smile and the twinkle in his eye.
