Mary V. Chatfield - San Angelo, TX
Mary V Chatfield was born in Long Island, New York on September 6, 1937.

She was the only child of Cornelius and Elma Van Abshoven. A young woman with a brilliant mind she was accepted to Radcliffe, then went on to Columbia University where she received an MLS in library sciences. She worked as a librarian at Harvard University and then while there, also received an MBA from Harvard. She was married to Robert W. CHATFIELD, Jr. who was a librarian at Harvard College, and they had a son together, Robert Chatfield.

Mary was always a very adventurous woman who travelled to many places including Europe, the Middle East, Japan and to Australia later in her life. After almost three decades at Harvard, she decided that it was time for a change.

She was a savvy art collector, loved Mexican art and artists, and had a great eye for emerging painters and sculptors. She wanted to move closer to Mexico and thus accepted the position of library director at Angelo State University. She immediately felt at home in San Angelo, where she was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church serving as a member of St. Catherine's Guild. She was also a master gardener, a member of the SAMFA Collectors Society, and she served on the Advisory Board of Adult Protective Services. Mary was an avid reader and a member of the local book club.

She retired from ASU and spent a couple of years back east, but her heart was truly in San Angelo. She returned in 1999, and not ready to stay home, she was happy to work as a reference librarian at the Tom Green County Library, where she was able to help many San Angelo residents. Mary stayed very involved in the arts, she graciously gave her time to assist SAMFA in cataloging the museum's and its patrons' works. She left many pieces of her unique art collection to SAMFA. She also was a generous donor to ASU and Harvard University.

Mary loved animals, especially dogs. She was very fond of her corgi "Sugar" and she enjoyed their visits with Dr. Hooker and his caring staff. She is missed dearly by all her San Angelo friends who treasured her sense of humor, her intelligence, and her tongue-in-cheek spirit.

She leaves behind her son Robert Chatfield from Bethesda MD., and her cherished granddaughter, Sarah Chatfield.

A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be 11:00 Saturday March 3, 2018 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
