He was a magistrate and later Mayor of Eastbourne.

He was named after Nevill Lodge which his parents owned to house their assistants, and also where his mother died. It was demolished in or after 1947.
He was apprenticed in Ashford, Kent; he then worked in London and went on to become a draper in Eastbourne. Here he rose to eminence, being for many years a member of the governing body, Alderman and J.P. for the Borough and for the County of Sussex. Mayor of the Borough 1901-2. Well known for his life-long interest in Sunday schools.
His funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever to have taken place in the borough.
