His fathers birth certificate says that he, John Wood, was a commercial traveller.
So, it seems Mary was pretending to be married to Mr Wood.

There's a marriage for George W Ormiston and Minnie Train in the June quarter 1915, Newcastle district, 10b 416. Then a death for a George W Ormiston, age 37, in the Farnham district, March quarter 1922, 2a 220.
It doesn't look as if Leonard and Minnie had children together.
Best wishes
Caroline

I think we are close. John CHATFIELD, the postie of Hastings, was not Leonard Henry Chatfield's father but step-father.
Leonard Henry Chatfield was not a Chatfield but a WOOD or a GOOD as it seemed to suit. He was a Good in 1911.

I have been in touch with LHC's son and he has not mentioned his mother. It would be far easier to conduct this enquiry directly. Can you email me on chatfhs@aol.com or give me your telephone number and I can call you. I don't think Brian now 81 years old knows all the answers. His father was Leonard Henry Chatfield by unmarried Mary Mepham in 1933. The fact that his father married Minnie Train Ormiston may not have been known to him. The Train - Ormiston is a bit uncertain as the dates and places are around two years different for her birth and parents. It is certain that the marriage I questioned did happen in 1927. As a soldier Farnham is not far from Aldershot where he would have been based. How Minnie got from Tynemouth to Hampshire/Surrey is still to be discovered. It is certain that George W Ormiston was probably born in the USA and married her in 1915. See Census below:

I know the birth dates don't quite match. George W Ormiston died in 1922, Farnham, Surrey.
Leonard Henry Wood adopted name Chatfield married Minnie in 1927.
BUT Leonard Henry Chatfield had a liason with Mary Mepham, the result was my contact, Brian L Mepham born 1933 in Battle district near Hastings. I think Minnie may have been divorced, died or just separated.

There is an entry for Leonard Chatfield in the National Probate Calendar 1956. Admons granted to widow Minnie. So they were still married but whether living together or not I don't know.
