February 26, 2004 Syracuse native Susan Morse, 55, died at home on February 26, 2004. She was the first female apprentice of Painters Local 31, and the first female journeyworker painter. Ms. Morse owned the painting company Women's Work of Central New York, Inc., of Syracuse; and Women's Work of Central Florida, Inc., of Orlando. She was a 30-year member of the National Organization of Women (NOW), and is included on the Rosa Parks Wall of Tolerance in Mississippi. Her family and friends were entertained by her extraordinary sense of humor, and deeply respectful of her compassion, generosity, and fierce political activism.
Susan was predeceased by her father Edward R. Morse in 1969. She is survived by: her mother, Betty Jane Morse; a sister, Kathleen Morse, Kathleen's life partner, Ginny Russell; and a brother, Edward Morse. Ms. Morse is also survived by stepchildren Karen Saxenian, husband Gary, and their daughter Ava Bleu; Lisa Chatfield and her son Patrick; Kimmy Chatfield and her life partner Jessie Cizenski; aunts Leona Hayes, Rosemary DeBottis, and Ann Morse; uncle Michael DeBottis; many cousins, and friends including lifelong cherished friends Marlene Ryan and Marlene Chatfield.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 6, at 11 a.m. at Pentecost Evangelical Missionary Baptist Church, 1650 S. State Street.
