Narrative

Death Dec 1868
Roberts John 43 Tunbridge 2a 307

John and Harriette Roberts were married around 1854. They lived in Tunbridge Wells for a few years, and then moved to the neighboring village of Hadlow. In 1859, The Maltings of Hadlow Brewery were under construction, and the opportunity for employment probably was the reason the family moved there. John Roberts did indeed work for Hadlow Brewery as a "traveller" (itinerant salesman). As a brewery traveller, John Roberts probably earned just enough to get by. His unmarked grave was mute witness to the family's hard times following his early death.
