Obituary
Frank Michael Yakots, 92, a former resident of DeLand, FL, died January 18, 2009. A private family Celebration of Life has been held.
Mr. Yakots, the son of Anna and Stephen Yakots, was born in Detroit. During his childhood, he developed an interest in music. Frank began piano lessons at an early age, and at 15, he became a young professional.
In 1938, he appeared on the cover of the Billboard magazine, which is a weekly publication devoted to the music industry. During World War II, he served as an Army musician. After the war, he worked in Special Services, organizing European musicians for performances for American servicemen in Europe. At this time, he was director, coach and accompanist for many of Europe's finest musicians.
During the 1950s, Frank was a professional pianist and teacher in California, serving as a performer, accompanist and coach for operas, musicals, television and movies.
Frank received a Bachelor of Music from Stetson University, and a Master of Music from the University of South Florida. His Stetson music professor made the following comments in reference to his senior piano recital: "Your recital was far beyond a student recital. It was the performance of an artist."
Frank was a Professor of Music at Darton College from 1968 to 1986. One of his colleagues remarked, "He is one of those rare pianists who is equally proficient in playing and teaching both classical and popular music."
Frank is survived by his wife Gwen; his children Zane DeKoenigsberg, Stefany Yakots and Stephen H. Yakots; stepdaughter Susan Yakots; and grandchildren Joshua Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Sarah Yakots and Brad Yakots.
