Civil War-Company D, 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics-Artificer.
Enlisted Dec 30, 1863-Discharged Sep 22, 1865.
"Elias Sayles, seventy six, died yesterday at his home, 425 Broadway from the effect of heart trouble from which he had been a sufferer for several months. He came to this city from Keene, Ionia County, in 1886 when he gave up the cares of active life on his farm. Since that time, he has lived here. Surviving are the widow three daughters and two sons.
Funeral services will be held at the Second Street Methodist church at one thirty with interment in Fairplains Cemetery.
He was a Civil War veteran having served as a Private, Company D, First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics, enlisting at Lowell in 1863 serving until the close in 1865."
