Brigadier General, Confederate States Army. Graduated West Point in the class of 1827. He had a distinguished career in the US Army until is resignation on July 31,1861. He was brevetted Major for gallantry against the Seminoles and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Infantry on June 5, 1860. On September 23, 1861 Rains was appointed brigadier and assigned a command under D.H. Hill. In the spring of 1862, he created the anti- personnel mine. Gen. Rains became famous for his invention of land mines and anti-ship "torpedoes" (harbor mines).
