Haggai was the son of Canadian born parents, Mordecai and Mary Ann (Shaver) Westbrook. Haggai was also born in Ontario, Canada and in February 1849, it was here he was wed to his first wife, Emily Scott.
The newlyweds relocated to Vergennes, Kent County, Michigan where they raised their children and resided for the 22 years of their marriage. By the 1870 US Census, Haggai, a farmer, had accumulated personal and real property valued at $8,300.
Emily was mother to (9)children; sadly, two of their children died in infancy and two in early childhood. Emily died in April 1871; the child she gave birth to that year, Emily, also died later in the year.
In January 1872, Haggai marries to Miss Melissa Snow and fathers another family of (6) children.
Eighteen years after the death of Emily, Haggai is laid to rest in Baily Cemetery, Kent County, Michigan, at her side.
